The Nigerian Table Tennis Team was neglected by the Ministry of Sport on their trip to the African Table Tennis Championships holding in Morocco. One of Nigerian’s table tennis Veteran, Funke Oshonaike has made some shocking revelations about the Ministry of Sports while expressing disappointment about the way it is being run.
The Nigerian athlete is presently at Agadir in Morocco as one of Nigeria’s representatives at the African Table Tennis Championships. Oshonaike took to the social media to express disappointment over the team’s failure to show up for the tournament blaming the Ministry of Sports. She said: After more than 25yrs of representing Nigeria, My great country Nigeria has touched where they are not supposed to touch and it hurts so bad! “I’m in Agadir Morocco to represent NIGERIA in Africa table tennis championship and the female team has just been worked (walked) over because I’m the only one here and the others are not here! “They couldn’t make it because of the ministry of sport. No money! We are the champion in Africa and the people in sports couldn’t care less,” the country’s flag bearer in the 2016 Summer Olympics said. She however commended the president of the Nigeria Table Tennis EnitanOshodiwho according to he is doing his best to improve the popularity of the sport in the country. “My dear president EnitanOshodi has been doing a lot for the development of this sport and even has to pay for some of the guys to be here but he’s not encouraged at all.” Such level of non-commitment and gross negligence as this seems not to be in the table tennis sport alone in Nigeria and it only becomes a question the federal government has to answer whether there is proper monitoring of activities in the Sports Ministry. Not-so-happy Oshonaike further revealed that the Nigeria team’s failure to appear in Morocco might hinder them from participating at the upcoming game in Sweden which would keep them from climbing up the ladder.
