Alvan FC Humbles Fed. Poly Nekede in Convocation Match

As part of events to commemorate the 50th convocation ceremony of AlvanIkoku Federal College of Education, the football team of the college defeated their counterparts from the Federal Polytechnic Nekede 2-0 to the delight of the home crowd. The match which took place at the AlvanIkoku football pitch attracted some heads of department and students of the college were on ground to cheer their team to victory.
The game lasted for 90 minutes and saw the lads of Alvan outplay their visitors and kept a clean sheet for the entire duration of the match. The Alvan team tutored by proficient Sport Director Mr. NnochiriNwaiwu proved to be the better side and entertained fans who turned out to watch the game. The encounter heralded other programmes that were outlined for the convocation week.
In an exclusive chat with Sports Ambassador, the Sports Director of AlvanIkoku College of Education, Owerri noted that the essence of including sports as one of the programmes to celebrate the convocation is to bring the two institutions together and use it as a platform fro skills development. The students also benefited from the event as they were relaxed and had a fun filled day.
“Football is the king of sports and it is also a media event which has global audience. We thought is wise to make football part of the programmebecause we know it will engage the youths and bring them together under a serene environment instead of them whiling away their time in other frivolous activities. We intentionally used the pitch panel to send significant messages to the students. Some of the messages read: Say No To Violence, Make Alvan Great, etc.”Mr. Nwaiwu said.
He further emphasized the achievement of the male and female football team under his tenure as Director of Sports. Here him: “In the sports department, we have made effort to promote what we termed Sports Man Policy. This is basically to convince talented athletes to take education seriously. We encourage them to see that sports and education can go in tandem. The College have been convinced by my office to reserve a quota as scholarships for potential talents we bring from the city of Owerri and beyond. ”
Speaking further, he stated that “for the past thirteen years, AlvanIkoku Federal College of Education have never qualified for NISEGA games, but under my stewardship, the College’s male and female teams have qualified for the national event. And we will be representing Zona A which consists of 10 Colleges of Education.”
However, Mr. Nwaiwu gave gratitude to the Provost of the College, Dr. Blessing Ijioma. He stressed that her support and amiable leadership has been vital to the success of the teams and other sports clubs in the College.
